Bible software: Mac
A friend recently asked a group of pastors about using Bible software on a Mac. Here is my response:
Because I’m a moron, I’ve managed to buy extensive resources in both Accordance and, more recently, Logos. (I also dropped a few denarii on BibleWorks for PC a few years ago.) In my opinion, Accordance is a far better user experience than Logos *3* (Mac Engine 1), especially for studying Greek and Hebrew. However, the Lutheran resources are far greater in Logos.
The mac version of Logos 4 is still in Alpha, but with the latest version (Alpha 4, I think), you can actually start to use it (the previous Alphas were pretty much unusable). I used Logos 4/Mac for my sermon prep this week, and it was really terrific. I suspect I’ll be using only Logos soon.
And yes, you can definitely use your Luther’s Works in Logos 4 (or 3) on your Mac. Once you have your user name/pw in Logos 4, it automatically starts downloading everything you are licensed to own. It’s pretty amazing. And if you have an iPhone, your licenses will carry over to the Logos iPhone app.
Since I’m relatively new to Mac, and brand new to Logos, I had to call tech support a few times to get several boxed modules I’d purchased working (this was on the original Mac engine). They were incredibly helpful and fixed my problems in a snap.
Whether you go with Accordance or Logos, you’ll be well served. For my purposes, knowing what I now know, I’d invest entirely in Logos 4, even though it’ll probably be a few weeks or months before you can really start using all the new features.
