Simple Prayers Every Christian Should Know
2009 April 21
I want to make a list for adult catechumens of simple prayers they should know by heart. I want it to be a short list, but I think what I have so far is too short:
Simple Prayers Every Christian Should Know:
- Our Father
- Jesus Prayer (“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”)
- Kyrie (“Lord, have mercy! Christ, have mercy! Lord, have mercy!”)
- Luther’s Morning and Evening Prayers
What am I missing?
Other prayers that have been very helpful to me are the Collect for Grace, the Collect for Peace, and the prayers at the end of Compline in Lutheran Service Book; however, I fear those might be too overwhelming for the kind of list I want to make. (I’m excluding prayers for before/during/after Communion; I have a separate list for that already.)
Give me your thoughts or suggestions in the comments.

How about Psalm 23
Prayers for before and after meals.
Ditto that.
Ditto that ditto.
Some sort of simple intercessory form … something like this (which I stole from the Anglicans):
We most humbly ask You of Your goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor … and all those who, in this transitory life, are in any trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.
Yeah, I'd also say Psalm 23 and The mealtime prayers.
Thanks for posting these Pastor. I am on the road, and dialed up your blog to find these comforting orisons.
Before and after communion.
Before studying God's Word.
