A Daily Prayer

by Christopher Esget

Rev. Robert Macina is a Lutheran pastor in Denver, Colorado. He recently shared on Facebook a daily prayer that he says based on the six chief parts. I share it with his permission.

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.
Have mercy on us, O God, according to Thine unfailing love; according to Thy great compassion, blot out all our iniquity and cleanse us from our sins; for we know our transgressions, and our sin is always before us. Against Thee, Thee only, have we sinned and done what is evil in Thy sight, so that Thou art proved right when Thou dost speak and justified when Thou dost judge. Surely we are sinners from birth, sinful from the time our mothers conceive us. Surely, Thy desire is truth in the inner parts; and in the inmost part Thou dost teach us wisdom. Cleanse us and we will be clean. Wash us and we will be whiter than snow. Let us hear joy and gladness; let the bones Thou hast crushed rejoice. Hide Thy face from our sins and blot out all our iniquity. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Cast us not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from us. Restore unto us the joy of Thy salvation; and with Thy willing Spirit, uphold us.

Father in heaven, sanctify us by Thy holy Name; and make Thy Name holy to us. Let Thy kingdom come to us and draw us into Thy kingdom. Let Thy good and gracious will be done to us and help us to do Thy will. Give to us today our essential bread and help us to receive it with thanksgiving from Thy hand. Give to us the Bread of Life, the Body of Christ and His Blood shed for us, for the forgiveness of all of our sins. O Lord, as Thou dost forgive us, help us to forgive others; as Thou dost love us help us to love others. Lead us not into temptation, but away from it; for Thou dost tempt no one, just as Thou art not tempted. But we are tempted, when, by our own sinful and evil desires, we are dragged away from Thee and enticed away from Thee. And when our desires have conceived, they beget sin; and when sin is full grown, it begets death. Deliver us from sin and death. Deliver us from the Devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh with its lusts and desires. Put Thy Holy Spirit within us, and move us outside of ourselves and unto Thee in Christ; that, in Christ, we may be Thy true sons and Thou our true Father in heaven.

Holy Father, Holy Son, and Holy Spirit, help us to have Thee alone as our God. Help us to fear and love and trust in Thee above all things. Help us to love Thee with all our heart and soul and strength and mind. Help us to continually, and without ceasing, to call upon Thy Name in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving to Thee for Thy goodness to us. Sanctify us this day, and sanctify this day for us. Help us to honor our father and mother, and other fathers, mothers, and authorities which Thou hast established in this life for the sake of order and love. Help us to preserve our neighbor in his life, and marriage, and possessions and income, name and reputation, house and goods, wife and children, servants and cattle, and everything that belongs to our neighbor for him.

O Lord, help us to not be proud and arrogant, and lifted up to provoke Thy wrath against us. Help us to not be weighed down in our hearts with drunken indulgence, and intoxication, and the worries of daily life, so that the day of Thy reappearing might not unexpectedly close in on us like a trap. But help us, O Lord, to escape all that is coming upon this world; and to stand in Thy presence when Thou dost reappear in Thy glory to judge the world. Lord Jesus, help us to keep our eyes focused on Thee, the author and perfector of our faith; who for the joy set before Thee, endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God to prepare a place there for us and for all who trust in Thee. Help us to gladly and willing suffer here with Thee in this life, that we may share in Thy glory for all eternity. Come to us, Holy Spirit, and grant us Thy true fruits of love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and self control. O Lord, grant to us and to all Thy holy people throughout the world, Thy forgiveness, eternal life, salvation, and help in Christ. Call unto Thyself all who have never known Thee, as well as all who once knew Thee but have fallen away. O Lord, we especially pray for… (here include petitions for specific people by name and for all other current issues). These and all the prayers of our hearts, we bring before Thee, trusting in Thy mercy through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O Lord, grant to us, this day, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit. Continue to teach us by Thy Word; clothe us in Christ by Baptism; Absolve us of our sins; and nourish us with the Body and Blood of Christ. All thanks and praise to Thee, Holy Father, Holy Son, and Holy Spirit, for creating us unto eternal life, redeeming us from our sins, and for continually sanctifying us through Thy Holy Word and Sacraments; for Thou, Holy Father, Holy Son, and Holy Spirit art the only God, who was and is forevermore. Amen.

    Pr. Esget,

This is an excellent prayer, I like how it reflects all parts of the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments, like reciting the Small Catechism each time we pray. I’ll be printing this out and taping it to my wall along with Luther’s Morning and Evening Prayers, thanks for passing it on!

(BTW, I haven’t commented on your blog before, but I’ve had it in my RSS feeds for a while. I’m Ariel Campos on Facebook, I think you friended me a few weeks back.)
