Academic freedom?

An essay on making Christian worship “Muslim-friendly” was published on the Concordia University–Portland website, but then pulled when some Lutherans noticed it. Someone had the good sense to make a copy.
I immediately thought of this bit of heresy when I read this article in the Washington Post about the Pope’s speech at Catholic University. Here’s an excerpt:
However, in a pointed message to scholars who stray from church teachings, the pope stressed that Catholic doctrine is paramount. “Any appeal to the principle of academic freedom in order to justify positions that contradict the faith and the teaching of the Church would obstruct or even betray the university’s identity and mission,” he said.
“Teachers and administrators,” the pope continued, “whether in universities or schools, have the duty and privilege to ensure that students receive instruction in Catholic doctrine and practice.”
Wouldn’t it be magnificent if our leaders spoke with the same conviction regarding Lutheran doctrine?

Wouldn’t matter. Doesn’t matter at Catholic educational institutions. He’ll come, he’ll go, and the Catholic schools upholding Catholic doctrine will continue to do so and those that don’t, won’t.
The fact is, Catholicism is whatever the Catholic wants it to be and pretty much proceeds apace regardless of the pope. Been there, though I didn’t do that when I was. He’s kind of like Grampa for most — you love him and he’s grampa, but hey, life goes on and Gramps isn’t really with it.
